Six dolphins, two whales rescued after mass beaching

RESCUE crews worked throughout the weekend to try and save distressed whales and dolphins stranded on an island off the Tasmanian coast.

At least 60 pilot whales and 20 bottlenose dolphins died on New Year Island.

On Sunday night only six dolphins and two whales had been returned to the water.

The mass beaching came a day after 13 dolphins were found stranded at nearby King Island.

Eight were saved.
