VIDEO killed the radio star, and now the internet has killed video in Tannum Sands.

The town's last video store - the Tannum Central Blockbuster - will close its doors on January 31.

Owners Shane and Christine Hicks said they had considered shutting shop for the past 12 months.

Mr Hicks said the slowest periods of his "slowly dying industry" were between Australia Day and Easter.

Some days, he said, they only had a dozen customers.

"The way the industry has gone with the access to internet downloads... it's really ruined it," he said.

"It's made our decision a lot easier."

The parents of three have been in the video industry for 16 years, originally owning a store in Boyne Island.

"It's sad because there are still a lot of people who still rent. They've been coming in saying, 'what are we going to do'," Mr Hicks said.

"You get a lot of regulars that you know are going to come in on a Friday at 3pm," Mrs Hicks said.

Busiest time was 2002 when they would order in more than 50 copies of a popular title.

New releases, older titles, light boxes, shelving and the counter are now being sold.
