Four uni students shot dead in PNG protest
Four people were killed and seven injured when police shot at protesting university students in Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby, the country's Parliament has been told.
The protesting students attempted to march from the University of Papua New Guinea to Parliament this morning, but police stopped them leaving the campus.
The students said police fired shots directly into the crowd when the students would not let them arrest the president of the student council.
Witnesses said officers then began attacking protesters, punching and kicking them.
Police are yet to issue a statement about the incident.
Port Moresby General Hospital said 10 students had been admitted.
Student Gerald Peni told the ABC a number of people were injured and some might have died.
"They fired shots, they fired shots directly at the crowd. They fired tear gases, I was right in front. And many of the students they fell, they got injured, we don't know how many casualties we may have at the moment," he said.
