Ipswich bike shop wins national honour

YELLOW Jersey Bike Shop in Ipswich has won a national award that recognises its dedication to promoting safe cycling.

In a wonderful achievement for owner Troy Dobinson and his team, Yellow Jersey was named Bicycle Retailer of the Year.

Recognising its impact on cycling, the award citation described it as a leading destination bike shop for eight years. It praised the Yellow Jersey for stocking all kinds of bikes, parts and accessories and having a terrific customer service team and repair workshop.

But more meaningfully, the award paid tribute to the 24//7 Cycling Safety Fund that was set up following the death of three Ipswich cyclists last year, including Troy's mother Narelle.

Troy set up the fund as a campaign to create much-needed safe cycling facilities and education for Ipswich.

Troy Dobinson said it was a great honour to accept the award for Yellow Jersey Bike Shop and the 24//7 Cycling Safety Fund.

"I would like to thank my family and staff for their amazing work and efforts for the store," Mr Dobinson said in his speech.

"The Yellow Jersey Bike Shop's success stems from the commitment to the local community, which will always be our strong focus. To our customers and friends, thank you so much for the support you give to the business. I appreciate it.

"To Trek bicycle corporation, through your commitment to the bicycle retailing network in 2012, you have Australia's best retailer. This reflects on your best practices and products."

He dedicated the award to his mum, who lost her life doing what she loved - riding her bike.

"This award would not be possible without her. She was killed last July when hit by a car whilst riding her bike. Since then we have founded the 24//7 Cycling Safety Fund," he said.

"Working alongside Ipswich City Council and State and Federal Government authorities we will make cycling safer by improving facilities and providing education of cycling for both cyclists and motorists. Thank you to everybody."
