Shed group just for men

FOR men looking to find solace and pass time, the Lockyer Valley Community Activity Shed Incorporated are having a launch at 11am on March 16.

A ceremony will be held to launch the Lockyer Valley Activities Shed at 91 Western Drive, Gatton next Wednesday for people to join and pass time.

Maurice Hennessy said the idea is to make the shed work for people with idle time.

“It allows men to take part in activities to occupy this idle time,” he said.

He said the aims of the group are to provide social contact through activity-based projects to assist in raising the community interest in mature age men.

“We also provide a mentoring service to assist local youth and disengaged youth to experience learning through the wisdom of the mature aged community,” Mr Hennessy said.

“It is also important to communicate knowledge sharing between existing shed groups.

“Another aim is to provide an outlet, attracting people interested to participate in hands on activity-based projects.”

He said commitment to the group is only on a voluntary basis and regular gatherings are anticipated twice a week at three hour sessions.

A management committee already exists and is seeking to increase participation from the local community.

The group is affiliated with a national body, the Australian Men's Shed Association.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Steve Jones will carry out the launch of the project and other speakers will include representatives from Queensland Men's Shed Association, sheds on the Gold Coast, followed by a barbecue.

An invitation is extended to all interested people, business owners and managers to attend.

To assist with catering please contact Graham on 5462 3956 or Maurice on 0411 555 379 to RSVP your attendance.
