Sharks premiership winner signs with Knights

RUGBY LEAGUE: Newcastle's roster for next year is shaping up nicely with two-time premiership winner Chris Heighington the latest player to link with the Knights.

Heighington, who won titles with the Wests Tigers in 2005 and Cronulla last year, confirmed on Thursday that he would leave the Sharks after signing a one-year deal with the Knights.

"I grew up on the Central Coast and always liked the Knights and I remember watching the 1997 and 2001 grand finals, so it just made sense,” he said.

"There are some great young kids coming through the system and hopefully I can help out just as much off the field to see them grow as players.”

Heighington, who is due to represent England at the World Cup starting later this month, is the latest Knights recruit with coach Nathan Brown determined to improve on this season.

The Knights finished at the bottom of the ladder but Brown has been keeping busy in the player market.

The Knights have already signed Cowboys young gun Kalyn Ponga, Brisbane duo Tautau Moga and Herman Ese Ese, Roosters livewire Connor Watson and veteran forward Aidan Guerra while Shaun Kenny-Dowall linked with the club mid-season.

There is also speculation the Knights could target Bulldogs forward James Graham with Canterbury repoertedly trying to offload a number of players in order to get themselves under the salary cap for next year.

Brown said the Knights had pursued Graham earlier in the year and may look at having another crack at luring him north.

Heighington made 22 appearances for the Sharks in 2017, predominantly off the bench.
