Evans Head shark sighting scares surfer out of the water

LONG board surfer Michael Thompson had decided there will be no more surfing in remote areas around Evans Head for him.

Yesterday while surfing at popular break Half-Tide he happened to see a fin out of the corner of his eye.

"It could have been a great white shark about 10 metres away from me," he said.

"I know it wasn't a dolphin as I've been surfing for many years and know what a dolphin looks like and they don't usually swim alone."

Mr Thompson swam back to the shore as fast as he could, managing to catch a small wave in.

"I yelled at a few people surfing at Jogglys and got them out of the water too," he said.

"I found out later the day before there had been three sharks hanging around Evans Head."

Mr Thompson wanted to make people aware that sharks are still hanging about.

"You put it in the back of your mind that a shark attack (would be) a remote thing," he said.

"I was really shaken up and if I go back in the water, I will probably only go to Main Beach and not the remoter areas."
