Shark attack survivor Craig Ison won't go back in the water

SHARK attack survivor Craig Ison has told the ABC he will never go back into the water.

The 51-year-old veteran surfer was mauled by a great white shark while surfing at Evans Head on July 31.

Bitten on the arm and leg, Mr Ison has been recovering in hospital since the attack and is due to be released this weekend.

But he won't be returning to the water.

"After what I've been through, there's no way you would go back in the water," he told the ABC.

"It wouldn't make sense."

Mr Ison wants northern NSW authorities to install drum lines and shark nets to protect surfers and beach-goers.
