Shades of DK in Mitch Marsh, says Matthews

FORMER Australian Test star Greg Matthews can see so much potential in fellow all-rounder Mitch Marsh, some of the things he does remind him of legendary quick Dennis Lillee.

New Zealand is hanging on at 3-142 going into today's final day of the first Test at the Gabba.

And Macquarie Radio commentator Matthews, who took 61 wickets in 33 Tests, believes Marsh could be a real danger to the Black Caps as they still trail by an enormous 361 runs.

"Dennis Lillee in the '80s when he was 32/33, he'd really roll his fingers across the ball, and that's what I was thinking (when Mitch was doing the same) - 'Dennis used to do that'," Matthews told APN.

"He (Marsh) does most things right and I'm surprised sometimes they (the pace of his deliveries) are only late-120kmh.

"He bowls good areas.

"He really needs to get some runs ... (but) you can count on Mitchell, he looks very good."

Matthews said a large reason the visitors had performed poorly in this Test was because their match preparations were so limited.

"They're just a side that's undercooked," he said.

"How could you agree to a game at Blacktown for a couple of days and the Prime Minister's game?

"You want a competitive first-class game."

That's without mentioning the health of new-ball quicks Tim Southee and Trent Boult.

"Boult coming back from stress fractures in his back - he's like a boxer he just needs more miles in his legs," Matthews said.

"They've got no miles in their legs, and Southee not being 100% didn't help. Bowling poorly certainly didn't help."

Nathan Lyon's off-spin could shape as a danger for the Kiwi batsmen today as they look to save the Test, but Matthews wasn't afraid to give the 27-year-old some advice.

"They (New Zealand) need 7250 runs in two days," Matthews said.

"(Brendon) McCullum comes in with five minutes to tea and there are three blokes on the fence.

"He (Lyon) has got 162 Test wickets at 34. Australia's most successful off-spinner ever.

"He should have 250 at 25 if he bowls them six inches outside off stump."
