Sex offender who took teen into bushes faces new charges

A GLENELLA man who tried to rape a 13-year-old boy has been accused of breaching conditions supposed to keep the community safe.

Marcel Schauer has been charged with contravening two offender prohibition orders between May 5 and November 13, 2015.

He's also been accused of failing to comply with reporting conditions on June 1 this year and committing public nuisance on April 19.

Schauer had not yet entered pleas to those charges on Monday.

The 44-year-old, who's currently out on bail, was convicted of attempted rape in 2009.

The Mercury reported at the time that Schauer took the teen into bushes at Andergrove to have a smoke with him, forced himself on him and was about to rape him until the boy's father stepped in.

At the time, he was sentenced to probation for three years with strict reporting conditions and was due to receive medical, psychiatric and psychological treatment.

Schauer had been described as of borderline intelligence after being knocked off his bike by a car in 1983.

The case has been adjourned until September 21.

Courts can make a prohibition order banning convicted child sex offenders from specific behaviour if it's thought their behaviour risks children's lives or sexual safety.

After receiving the prohibition order, the offender is placed on the child offender register.
