Several media identities in line for Australia Day award
THE 2013 Australian of the Year will be named at a ceremony on the steps of Parliament House in Canberra today.
Media identities dominate the list of nine state and territory finalists.
Trailblazing journalist Ita Buttrose (NSW), Seven West Media chairman Kerry Stokes (WA) and media buyer Harold Mitchell (Vic) are among the hopefuls.
Betting on the award was suspended last week after Ms Buttrose was captioned in a Life Education Australia video as the "2013 Australia of the Year".
The embarrassing gaffe was put down to human error and later corrected to read "NSW Citizen of the Year".
An Australia Day Council spokesman said recipients of the Australian of the Year award were "never final until they are announced".
Others in line to be named Australian of the Year are:
- Cancer researcher Professor Adele Green (Qld)
- Cyber safety campaigner Sonya Ryan (SA)
- Adventure teacher Andrew Hughes (ACT)
- Social justice campaigner Dr Tom Calma (ACT)
- Indigenous talent mentors Mark Grose and Michael Hohnen (NT)
The Young Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year and Australia's Local Hero will also be named at the ceremony, which will be followed by a free public concert on the lawns of Parliament House featuring performances by Guy Sebastian, Jimmy Barnes, Timomatic and The Presets.
