SES storms Big Banana

ETERNALLY yellow, the Big Banana has gone a shade of orange during a publicity stunt highlighting National SES week.

Clarence Nambucca State Emergency Service volunteers turned out with SES Mascot Paddy the Platypus to see the iconic landmark change colour.

National SES Week, starting on Monday, is a way of congratulating the 40,000 volunteers nationally for their hard work and dedication in helping people in times of need.

"The week gives the wider community an opportunity to recognise the work and service of the SES and to thank the volunteers," SES community engagement coordinator Megan Hill said.

NSW's 10,000 State Emergency Service volunteers have spent 549,803 hours responding to storms, floods, rescues and searches, including 17,000 hours on the Coffs Coast planning for and responding to emergencies.

Clarence Nambucca Region Controller Caroline Ortel said SES volunteers provide an invaluable service to the community.

"These men and women selflessly give up their time to help people," Ms Ortel said.

"This year has been especially significant for many of our volunteers who've helped communities affected by severe weather in NSW as well as Queensland and Victoria."

According to NRMA Insurance research, 12 per cent of NSW residents report that a neighbour, or they themselves, have had to call on the SES for help as a result of a storm or flood emergency.
