Senate rejects university deregulation

THE Abbott Government's controversial education reforms have failed to get past the senate.

Among the crossbenchers to vote against the changes were Palmer United Party Senators Glenn Lazarus and Dio Wang and Independents Jacqui Lambie and Nick Xenophon.

Labor and Greens Senators also voted to reject the bill, with the final count being 33 to 31 votes.

Earlier, Glenn Lazarus told Education Minister Christopher Pyne to "stop harrassing" him over the reforms.

"Christopher Pyne is embarrassing himself and needs to stop harassing me and other crossbenchers," Sen Lazarus said in a statement.

"I am being inundated with text messages from Christopher Pyne virtually begging me to support the Abbott Government's higher education reforms."
