Seagulls outplayed by Seagulls

TWEED Heads Seagulls let slip a commanding 24-10 lead deep into the second half to be overrun by Wynnum Manly 26-24 in the opening round of the 2012 Queensland Rugby League Intrust Cup competition.

The grand-final replay ensured a big crowd rocked up to Kougari Oval yesterday as Tweed Heads strived to atone for their gripping 16-10 loss to Wynnum in the 2011 decider.

They certainly looked on target to get the bikkies, leading 12-10 at the break and then posting converted tries to Kevin Gordon and Cody Nelson and race to what should have been a match-winning 24-10 lead.

After earning a line drop-out, Wynnum went on the attack with classy fullback Sean Loxley putting in a zigzagging run to score and put his side back in with a winning chance.

From there, it was all green, red and white; with the Grieve brothers Jon and Matt, pairing up for the Seagulls' next try, before man-of-the-match Loxley made a break in the 72nd minute to score the match-winner.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls 26 (Sean Loxley 2, Matt Grieve, Dan Wallace, Mitchell Moore tries; John Te Reo 3 goals) def Tweed Heads Seagulls 24 (Kevin Gordon, Cody Nelson, Aaron Cannings, Selasi Berdie tries; Beau Henry 4 goals).
