Scientist to ensure water in Gladstone Harbour is healthy

A TOP marine scientist has been given the job of leading a panel of experts to ensure the water in Gladstone Harbour remains healthy.

Dr Ian Poiner has expertise in researching tropical marine environments, according to Environment Minister Andrew Powell who announced the placement on Friday.

The Port of Gladstone is considered one of the world's major coal ports, exporting more than 50 million tonnes each year.

"This is a key milestone in progressing the Gladstone Healthy Harbour Partnership," Mr Powell said.

"Dr Poiner has more than 30 years' experience in the research of tropical marine systems and how they are influenced by human activities such as onshore and offshore mining, port development and fisheries.

"The Gladstone Healthy Harbour Partnership was announced in August after the incoming LNP Government copped criticism from the UN's environmental arm UNESCO".

In June, the group warned port developments along Queensland's coastline was threatening the Great Barrier Reef.
