IT WAS the sale that was meant to stop a nation.
Instead has been a spectacular flop.
Touted as the biggest thing since Ben Hur, shopping website Click Frenzy was a massive fizzer as eager shoppers found themselves unable view the site's webpage.
Australia's inaugural Click Frenzy event attracted more than 180 of Australia's biggest retailers looking to cash in weeks out from Christmas.
Event organisers promised huge savings on a range of products - some up to 90 per cent off normal retail prices.
The online sale was due to commence in Queensland at 7pm.
The spectacular meltdown sent the social media world into a frenzy.
It quickly became the number one trending story on Twitter and a number of Facebook pages slamming the event were quickly established.
In a statement released on Facebook event organiser Grant Arnott apologised to frustrated shoppers.
"Firstly, I would like to issue an apology to anyone who has been inconvenienced and frustrated by the technical issues relating to the inaugural Click Frenzy 24 hour online sale," Mr Arnott said.
"The technical directors, developers and infrastructure specialists involved in this inaugural event are working to get to the root of what occurred with the wave of traffic at 7pm."
But it was not the only website to fall victim to its own popularity.
Many websites from participating retailers were unreachable shortly after the sale opened.
Earlier in the day a national retailer attempted to hijack the promotion by launching its own "Christmas Frenzy" event.
Their website went into meltdown due to the heavy traffic and was offline for more than two hours.
