Sahar's sweet date cake wins dessert showdown
SAHAR Awdi hopes sugar is the way into Aussie hearts and shopping trolleys.
The mum-of-three won tonight's final, dessert-themed episode of Recipe to Riches with her decadent toffee date cake.
She describes the cake, 20 percent of which is comprised of caramelised dates, as "your new addiction".
"I've never had anyone not have an amazing reaction to it, from little kids to older people," Sahar told APN.
"Ever since I started making it I've been making it on request for friends and family."
The classic flavours of her cake beat out two more unconventional recipes: dessert spring rolls and peanut butter and caramelized popcorn ice cream.
"With the people who bring their ideas (to the show), everyone's amazing," she said.
"But whenever I concentrated to looking at the product launches and public's reaction (to the other recipes), I'm very confident with my cake and my product launch."
Awdi's mum gave her a good luck charm which the 33-year-old said helped her through the difficult batch-up challenge, where contestants must make large quantities of their recipe in a commercial kitchen to prove its viability.
"I'd left an apron at her house and the night before (filming) she called me to pick it up," she said.
"My mum is an artist, and she'd painted on the apron a pictured of my cake.
"It made me feel more determined to get it done. Every time I faced a challenge in the kitchen I remembered my family and my children and kept pushing on."
In next week's grand final of the food marketing show, Sahar's cake will go up against the six other recipes for a $100,000 prize.
Whichever product sold the most during its one-week trial on Woolworths shelves will also earn a permanent spot at supermarkets across the country.
"To have a product starting out there and to possibly be able to bring other ideas into the shops would make my family's life better," Sahar said.
"I can't even start to imagine it."
The Recipe to Riches grand final airs next Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel 10.
