Rush to finish Yelgun site before Splendour in the Grass

GET A MOVE ON: Work at the North Byron Parkland site at Yelgun, which will host Splendour in the Grass next month.

ONE MONTH before Splendour in the Grass debuts at its new home in Yelgun, work is moving ahead to have the North Byron Parklands site ready in time.

Construction work began at the 256ha site in November after the last approval from the council was issued said Mat Morris, general manager of North Byron Parklands.

"We really didn't anticipate the heavy, consistent rain of the past five months and we're hoping for sunny skies from here until after the festival," Mr Morris said.

"But rain, hail or shine the venue will be ready.

"We've pulled out all stops. Our team has worked really hard to ensure that the venue will be ready in time for Splendour."

Festival patrons are capped at 25,000 this year, Mr Morris said, as part of conditions set down by the State Government last April in an approved five-year trial at the site running until 2017.

"Our five-year trial allows for incremental growth in patron numbers if we meet strict key performance indicators year by year," he said.

If these indicators are met, Splendour in the Grass could potentially achieve up to 35,000 patrons during the fifth year of the trial, he said.

An estimated 15,000 festival goers will camp onsite, with construction work now concentrated on a network of roads, staging areas and drain crossings.

"Everything else will be brought to the site and then removed after the event," Mr Morris said.

More than half of the Yelgun site will be used for bush regeneration and habitat for native animals with Splendour campers encouraged to participate in tree planting activities.

In a joint initiative between North Byron Park

lands and Splendour in the Grass, campers can volunteer to plant seedlings to bridge the gap between two forested areas on the site.
