Rose City craftsman has his whips hung up in parliament

WARWICK Whips owner David Bishop will have his workmanship featured on an ABC documentary, as well as in the Australian House of Representatives.

Mr Bishop had the opportunity last month to fashion a whip for MP Scott Buchholz, the deputy whip for the Liberal National Party.

The party whip is a member of parliament who is selected by their parliamentary party to take on the role of team manager.

"We sell whips and do whip repairs for people all over Australia, but this is the first time we have done something like this," Mr Bishop said.

"It was very exciting for a small business that is fairly new in town - we have only been going since 2010.

"It is quite an honour to have someone like that find you and talk to you about what you do, and think your work is good enough to purchase."

Mr Buchholz ordered a 12 plait roo hide whip, which took a couple of days to make.

"He ended up buying two of them; they are hanging in his office in Parliament," Mr Bishop said.

"The whips are also going to be featured in a documentary that the ABC is doing - I'm yet to get all the details."

Mr Bishop said the art of making whips had been around for quite a long time.

"It is an art that is slowly being recognised again through the efforts of the Australian Plaiters and Whipmakers Association," he said.

"It seems to be an industry that is doing quite well.

"We are also doing international purchases and sending whips overseas to America, Canada and the UK."

The term "whip" in parliament comes from the sport of fox-hunting in England.

The whipper-in was the person who whipped all the hunting hounds into a pack, pointed them in the right direction to chase the fox and ensured that the pack did not stray.

The use of the term "whip" may date back as far as the seventeenth century in the British Parliament.
