Robocops: Police go high tech in fight against bikie crime

POLICE will turn to technology to fight bikie crime on the Gold Coast using facial recognition software and smart phones.

Gold Coast Acting Chief Superintendent Des Lacy told the Courier Mail the technology would see footage and photos taken on smart phones matched against criminal data bases.

Coolangatta will be one of the areas across the state in which the technology will be trialled.

"What we want to do is try to see how it works in a small environment and that's why I was interested in having a look at it for the Gold Coast," Chief Supt Lacy told the Courier Mail.

He said, in the future, he expected the technology would be able to search hundreds of thousands of images in a state-wide criminal data base.

About 150 cameras will be in use between Southport and Coolangatta.
