Robben quits as Dutch miss World Cup qualification

ARJEN Robben scored two goals and then pulled the pin on his international career as the Netherlands missed out on qualifying for World Cup 2018.

The Bayern Munich winger did all he could to help the Dutch try to reach the playoffs but the 2-0 win over Sweden was not enough to leapfrog the Scandanavians into second place in Group A.

The Netherlands needed to win by seven clear goals to make the playoffs.

"I will always remember the 2010 World Cup and 2014. Those are my best memories. During those two competitions we formed a real team," the 33-year-old Robben said.

France had already qualified automatically from the same group and finished off its campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Belarus at the Stade de France.

Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud were the goalscorers.

In Lisbon it was winner takes all in Group B, with the home side taking the prize of automatic qualification.

Portugal won 2-0 over the previously unbeaten Switzerland thanks to a Johan Djourou own goal and an Andre Silva strike.

The Swiss, which had won nine out of nine qualifying games before this match, now have to go through the European playoffs.
