REVEALED: 10 Gatton region drug busts this year
OUR region is known for its fertile soil.
Some entrepreneurs are leveraging the great growing conditions in Queensland's salad bowl to grow all sorts of illicit substances and, under our noses, a number of other locals are stashing drug tools in the oddest of places.
The Gatton Star has compiled a list of 10 times the region's police helped take drugs off the streets this year:
That time a million dollars worth of drugs were nabbed on the Warrego Highway
It was just a routine traffic patrol, but cops made the discovery of the century in a 27-year-old's Hyundai iLoad. The car was passing through Minden at the time and contained more than 250 kilograms of marijuana.
That time police found a meth pipe in a teenager's underwear (and pot in his shoe)
Where do you keep your meth pipe? If you hide it in your underwear, it might be time to rethink your life choices. One 19-year-old learned this the hard way when police found his prized meth pipe stashed in his knickers.
That time police found syringes in a man's underwear
It's probably not the best place to store anything illegal, really, but underwear seemed to be 2019's answer to a locked safe. A 36-year-old man was pinned with a handful of charges after police found needles, syringes and more in his underwear.
That time a former pub owner drove with a blood alcohol reading of more than six times the legal limit
Although alcohol isn't illegal, it's still a drug so this woman's crazy drink driving story definitely counts. Though she told police she had "only" downed five drinks in the hour before getting behind the wheel, one 40-year-old woman blew more than six times over the legal limit.
That time someone should have just decorated their veranda with fiddle leaf figs
It is easy to admire anyone putting effort into gardening, but one man took his passion for greenery in a dodgy direction. Though the 53-year-old had managed to keep the possums away from his yield, it was a different story when police showed up.
That time an electrician "found MDMA" in a Gatton pub
When police found MDMA in a 20-year-old apprentice's wallet, he told them he found it in a pub in Gatton. The magistrate was not so believing and warned the man his life would "go down the toilet" if he got involved in the drug scene.
That time a Queensland Health employee set a hi-tech growing operation in his closet
Hydroponics, fans, lights and fertiliser. One Helidon health worker had it all worked out for the ultimate DIY pot growing operation.
That time a man mixed meth into his water
A few days without water is enough to kill someone so hydration is key to good health. But when you mix weird and wonderful things into your daily drop, the health rating can take a dive.
That time a mum told police about her 13 marijuana plants
With Marijuana Horticulture on her reading list, one 26-year-old mum was deep in the garden and rushed to the police station to share the news. Later that day, police made a trip to her place to check out the plants.
That time a stop sign dash led police to uncover a bong
Gliding through a stop sign was the perfect move to stand out. In the case of one 20-year-old, the manoeuvre drew police attention. Next minute, they were searching his car.
