A BENOWA couple is suing SBS for defamation after the broadcaster aired reports describing their Brisbane Colonial-themed restaurant as "offensive".

Husband and wife Mark and Angela Kennedy last month lodged a statement of claim in the Southport District Court against the Special Broadcasting Service seeking aggravated damages after the SBS Viceland reported about their now closed Hawthorne restaurant and bar British Colonial Co.

The restaurant marketed itself as being "inspired by the stylish days of the empirical push into the developing cultures of the world" and opened in mid-2016.

It closed in January, the claim states.

The action was launched after Viceland's YouTube channel posted a video in September last year which described the restaurant as "bad taste".
