Researchers find world's oldest axe head
RESEARCHERS have established that an axe head found in the Windjana Gorge National Park in Western Australia's Kimberley region is the world's oldest known such relic.
They believe it was used by indigenous Australians 49,000 years ago - coinciding with the estimated arrival of some of the first people to the continent - making it 10,000 years older than the tool that previously held the status of the world's oldest. It also was found in Australia.
Researchers said the axe head was found in the 1990s, but only recently carbon-dated.
