Shorten challenges Turnbull on trip to Nauru

LABOR leader Bill Shorten wants to see the detention centre on Nauru for himself, and take Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull with him.

The Opposition Leader was in Rockhampton last night, and fielded two questions from the community regarding the party's policy on refugees.

The first was from a Capricorn Coast woman.

"I came up tonight because I am, like many others, concerned about what is happening on Manus and Nauru," she said.

"Sadly, the reaction I get from most people of goodwill is that 'oh, well Labor are no better'."

Another man said he was disappointed that it was never brought up that most illegal immigrants come by plane, not boats.

"No one ever mentions why these people want to come here," he said.

"We discuss these people coming by boat but not the obscene amount of money we spend on defences."

Mr Shorten said people being places on unsafe boats and drowning at sea was not a safe system.

"We are not going to be part of that," he said.

"Labor will not see the people smugglers back in business.

"The reason why we have the determination (to see off people smugglers) is not because we don't believe in immigration... but rather, when you see people paying thousands to be places on unsafe boats... that is a disaster."

Mr Shorten said he had no interest in being part of a smuggling "business model".
