Reef watchdog postpones CQ dredging decision

JUST four days before it was to make a decision on whether to allow dredging on the Central Queensland coast, the Great Barrier Reef watchdog has opted to take Christmas off.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt gave an approval for the state-owned North Queensland Bulk Ports to dredge three million cubic metres of material around Abbot Point on December 11, forcing the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to make a decision by December 24.

Instead, GBRMPA has now extended the deadline to January 31.
