Reds all together for cause

RUGBY: Returning Reds prop Ben Daley missed a clear-cut opportunity to take a playful swipe at his backs teammates yesterday.

Good-natured jibes have long existed among rugby players about whether the backs or forwards are better players, or, in some cases, smarter.

The Reds' forwards stood tall against the Brumbies in Saturday night's 23-20 loss, even engineering a huge pushover scrum try after the hour mark.

But Queensland's backs had some moments to forget, notably with Rod Davies and Quade Cooper dropping the ball in try-scoring territory.

Daley was having none of that yesterday, though, pointing out the squad was a tight unit despite a 3-5 record going into this weekend's bye.

"Pointing fingers and laying blame, there's no need to, because everyone's had periods in the game where they've played really well, and everyone's played a bit poorly," Daley said.

Back from a knee complaint that cut short his recent tour of South Africa, Daley will look to bring fresh enthusiasm to a side down in confidence after three, three-point losses in the 2014 Super Rugby season. The Reds will take on the Hurricanes in Wellington next Saturday in a must-win game.

"I'm coming in ready to rip and tear, and I'll try to give the boys a bit of support," Daley said.

"The break this week will help to recharge the batteries. Having a loss and going into the bye, you want to get there as soon as possible."

Reds coach Richard Graham said Wallaby backs Dom Shipperley and Mike Harris should also be fit to play against the Hurricanes.
