Redcliffe man killed in freak roadside accident

A MAN has been killed after being run over by a car that careened into the back of his broken-down car on the M1 earlier today.

It is understood the 25-year-old Redcliffe man had pulled over on the side of the highway in the northbound emergency lanes due to engine problems, when he was allegedly hit around 11.20am.

The man's car was stationary at the time just in front of the Southport Exit 66 and he was at the front of his car when a second car smashed into the back of his car.

The man was caught underneath his silver Holden Rodeo and died on scene.

One witness said the man was 'unrecognisable'.

Paramedics attended and transported a 33-year-old female driver to the Gold Coast University Hospital as a precaution.

Operations supervisor Gavin Fuller said the woman was very lucky to not have any more serious injuries, but said she was distraught.

"The forces that were involved were a fairly severe impact, the speed limit along there is 110km/h," he said.

"She appeared to be uninjured but was treated with spinal precautions."

"The initial impact had caused the first vehicle that was broken down to be pushed approximately 20 metres further down the road and then it ended up off the actual side of the road on the embankment, so it was a fairly significant force."

Mr Fuller said once again the paramedics team had been called to a car crash on the M1 and warned motorists to avoid distractions and stick to the speed limit.

Firefighters are assisting, while the forensic crash unit are on scene.

Heavy delays are expected on the M1 with about 5km of gridlock. Two lanes are blocked.
