FOOTBALL: Over the past 25 years, thousands of goals have been scored at the Gatton Redbacks’ fields at Adare.
But last Saturday the club scored one of their most significant – celebrating 25 years since they planted their boots in Gatton.
The club originally started in Laidley in 1978 with practice and social games and fixtures with the Toowoomba District Soccer Federation.
But in 1991, after testing times in Laidley, the club moved to Gatton.
Addressing the crowd on Saturday evening, Adam Halstead said the first season in Gatton started with seven junior teams and one senior team which played at Gatton State School.
They’ve since progressed into securing, building and maintaining fields in Adare which is now home to 21 teams, six fields with the two main ovals having playing lights for evening games.
“The club is and has been very proud of many participating players and representative players from the club over the years and especially thankful to all the helpers over the years,” Halstead said.
“There is a huge need to keep our youth involved in such a good sport and their personal development and club growth will be strengthened.”
During the day, the Redbacks teams took on Willowburn, with all teams but the Fillies getting a game.
In the reserves, both teams played competitive football, but as much as the Redbacks’ wanted the win, they were unable to find the back of the net in the first half.
In the second half, Dominic Ruiser ran in a great goal from mid half but despite the Redbacks’ defence, Willowburn snuck in an extra goal.
After the official celebrations, the premier men took to the field.
Not long after Willowburn opened the scoreboard, Gatton’s Jackson Bell equalised the score with a ripper goal, followed by Nick Edwards backing him up with another.
Just before half time, Willowburn managed another goal leaving the field 2-2 at half-time.
In the second half, Willowburn returned strong, but in the 67th minute, Gatton’s Zac Kaddatz equalised again.
With both teams playing some great competitive football, neither were able to score again, with the teams settling for a 3-3 draw.
Players’ player went to Jackson Bell.
