Red Bull drivers lead race for V8 championship

THE cat-and-mouse battle for the V8 Championship was alive and well at Phillip Island yesterday, with Red Bull Racing Australia teammates Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup both saluting.

Whincup (pictured) took out the third and final race of the weekend, edging out fellow championship contender Mark Winterbottom with Lowndes third.

Whincup leads the championship race from Lowndes by just 20 points going into the final event, the Sydney 500 from December 6-8.

It was an admirable comeback from Whincup after he was on track to win the second race of the weekend before the safety car interupted proceedings.

That allowed Lowndes to peg back a six-second deficit and grab victory.

Winterbottom, who is now 124 points behind Whincup and still a chance of winning the title in Sydney, won the first race of the weekend on Saturday.
