Quiney the hero as Stars ease past Hurricanes

HE averaged just three runs in an underwhelming Test career, but Rob Quiney has sent a reminder to the cricketing world that he is still capable of mixing it with the best.

The Stars batsman was the hero for the Melbourne outfit, piloting them to a convincing victory over the Hobart Hurricanes in their Big Bash fixture at Bellerive Oval.

Quiney was eventually dismissed for 75 from 43 balls in the 16th over after a rare miscue off the bowling of Hobart import Stuart Broad.

The left-hander's innings included a stunning six high over mid-wicket that commentators say will take some stopping as the biggest six of the tournament.

The Quiney hit ended up in the Ricky Ponting Stand and the Test legend, who was on commentary for the match, was full of praise for the Victorian's efforts.

"That's not the biggest of the night, that's the biggest of the tournament so far. That's a huge hit,” Ponting said. "That's up in the top tier, that looked unbelievable.”

The Victorian's knock included five sixes, and Quiney was unlucky it didn't end in a century.

"It's the only ball in the last 30 he hasn't hit in the middle. That one came right off the toe of the bat,” Ponting said.

The Stars chased down the Hurricanes' 4-188 with two overs to spare and seven wickets in hand.

Earlier, Tim Paine blasted 91 for the home side.
