KILCOY was hit with a 2.7 magnitude earthquake this morning.

Geoscience Australia recorded the quake hitting right at ground level at 5:57am.

Residents in the Kilcoy area reported waking up to a "big boom", while the tremor was felt as far east as the Sunshine Coast and south as north Brisbane.

"Woken a big boom..thought truck crash or very loud thunder," Royston resident  Louise Gregory wrote on a post on the Higgins Storm Chasing Facebook page.

"Felt it at Woodford," wrote Brent Barnes-Mayman.

"Well there you go. That explains why I heard a rumble & door rattling. It was enough that I got out of bed to check if someone was trying to break in through one of the doors early this morning," Regina Burge from Alexandra Heads wrote.

"I was lying in bed and felt it, very very slightly....I didn't realise what it was until I read this post though. I am in Upper Kedron," wrote Clare Barker.
