QUEENSLAND Police Commissioner Ian Stewart says he will ask Premier Campbell Newman for harsher penalties to stamp out alcohol-fuelled violence.

Commissioner Stewart, speaking as a special guest at a Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce and Industry business breakfast this morning, said he would be seeking a "package of resources" to help stop assaults.

The announcement follows a raft of harsher penalties and lock-outs slated by the New South Wales government this week.

Commissioner Stewart said he believed more could be done to make people more accountable for their actions when drinking.

>> Earlier closures worth it to cut alcohol-fuelled violence

>> Pubs say early closing times no solution to violence

>> Coward punch victim's mother wants new laws to go further

>> QLD Opposition promises 1am pub and club lock out

>> Club lockouts, jail for coward punches in planned NSW laws

"We want to stop…the tragedies that happen," he said.

"When people make a senseless, split-second decision of hitting out at someone, that's a terrible, terrible thing that none of us should condone, and all of us should make a stand against it.

"I'm going to ask for a package of extra resources - a package with extra legislation.

"We want to stamp this out and make people accountable for their own actions.

"We can't have police officers on every corner - I wish we could - whether that's in the city or the suburbs.

"The problem is we've got one per cent who do the wrong thing."
