Qantas to axe hundreds of jobs

QANTAS is preparing to shed 500 engineering jobs across the country.

About 250 workers at the Avalon base in Victoria will not have their contracts renewed when production on nine Boeing 747-400 jumbo jets is completed later this month.

At least 200 of the cuts are expected to be from the maintenance departments at Sydney Airport.

According to the Herald, Qantas will also reduce its workforce at the RAAF base in Sydney's west.
