Counting starts at 10am today, bookies fear a beers win

PUNTERS who backed Zac Beers to win Flynn could win thousands of dollars if the Labor candidate pulls through the final leg of the race.

The ABC's latest prediction for a Labor gain in Flynn has forced betting agency Sportsbet to close its market, with the betting agency expecting big losses after backing Ken O'Dowd to win.

"If counting over the next few day reveals a swing back towards the LNP we may open it again, but at this stage it looks to be in the Labor column," a Sportsbet spokesman said.

Sportsbet said 70% of punters put their money on Mr O'Dowd, 25% on Mr Beers, and 5% on One Nation candidate Phil Baker.

But it's a hefty payout of $4 for a Mr Beers win that could come back to bite the bookies.

If Mr Beers can pull it off, the bookies will pay a $1.225 in every dollar punters put into the Flynn pool.

Mr Beers is currently leading Mr O'Dowd by a 3.6% margin, but pre-poll, postal, and absent votes, which are tipped to go in Mr O'Dowd's favour, are yet to be counted.

As of July 1, Sportsbet was also paying $1.20 for Mr O'Dowd, $34 for Craig Tomsett, and $51 for the rest of the candidates to win.

But some punters could lose big, with the spokesman saying "there were multiple $1000 bets on O'Dowd".

It's just one of a suite of Sportsbet clangers this election, with some of its worst blunders being that Greens candidates Alex Bhatal was a $1.80 favourite to win Victoria's Batman seat, and Rob Oakshott was a $1.75 favourite for a political revival in NSW's Cowper.

The biggest bet on Mr Beers was $400, with the punter set to collect $1600 if Mr Beers wins.
