Ponting says farewell after falling to Proteas spinner

FORMER Australian captain Ricky Ponting has been dismissed for eight in his final innings for his country.

The small crowd at the WACA ground in Perth gave the 37-year-old a rousing reception as he strode purposefully to the wicket, the South African team forming a guard of honour in tribute.

Ponting shook hands with Proteas skipper Graeme Smith before getting down to the business of trying to rescue the situation after Australia had struggled to 2-81 chasing an unlikely 632 for victory.

He played some solid shots early in his innings, including one trademark pull through midwicket for four, but was out soon after, caught by Jacques Kallis at slip off spinner Robin Peterson.

Australia went to lunch at 3-110 with opener Ed Cowan unbeaten on 37 and captain Michael Clarke on eight not out.
