Man charged with armed robbery of convenience store

UPDATE WEDNESDAY 12.55pm:

South Mackay man Zacharry Douglas Withers, 26, has faced Mackay Magistrates Court over the alleged robbery.

He's charged with robbery with violence and possessing utensils or pipes that had been used for drugs.

The matter was adjourned to September 28.

Withers remains in custody.

UPDATE TUESDAY 6am: A man has been charged following the armed robbery of a convenience store at South Mackay last night.

It will be alleged about 5.30pm, the man entered the Evan St business armed with a knife and demanded money from a female staff member.

The employee complied and the man fled on foot with a quantity of cash.

The man was located a short time later by police patrolling nearby.

A 27-year-old South Mackay man has been charged with one count each of armed robbery and possess drug utensil.

He will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court today.

 

UPDATE 10pm: CCTV footage of the incident was posted on social media.

EARLIER: Mackay police are on scene at TJ's Mini Mart at Evan St, South Mackay investigating a robbery which has just taken place.

Senior Sergeant Tony McDowall said police were unsure whether a weapon was produced, but the duty officer was pleased to report no one was hurt in the incident.

"At the moment we've been called down due to an allegation someone has come in and stolen some money from the till (cash register)," he said.

"...we're investigating that to establish exactly what has occurred.

"No, (no one is in custody), not at this stage. Scenes-of-crime officers are still reviewing the scene and CIB (Criminal Investigation Branch) officers will follow it up from there.

 

"(We have) No persons of interest at this stage. As soon as we do know something we'll probably do a media release at that time."

"No one was hurt, there was just some threats made. We're not quite sure (whether a weapon was produced), that's part of what we're investigating."

When the Daily Mercury arrived at the scene, police were speaking with an owner of the corner store.
