Steven Hunter, 47, was charged with Sarah Cafferkey's murder on Tuesday night.

He fronted at an out-of-sessions court hearing on Tuesday night before appearing briefly before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.

The magistrate set a committal mention date of next March.
