Pocock breaks hand against Pumas

RUGBY: The Wallabies have been hit with a huge blow with star back-rower David Pocock ruled out of the rest of the Rugby Championship with a broken hand.

The Brumbies forward was forced from the field in Saturday night's 36-20 defeat of Argentina in Perth just before half-time.

He went for scans and those revealed the break, meaning he will now miss the final two Tests of the Rugby Championship series against South Africa in Pretoria and Argentina in London.

Coach Michael Cheika said Pocock, who will tajke a year's sabbatical from the game next year, wanted to play on but said coaching staff had to keep the 28-year-old on the sidelines.

"It was quite swollen, so it was hard for him to move his hand,” he said.

"He wanted to play through but I had to take him off.

"Definitely wanted to play it through.”

Pocock has been hit by injuries this season and missed two of the three Tests with England with a fractured eyesocket.

He also had consecutive knee reconstructions and has also suffered with ankle and calf problems during his career.

Rebels flanker Sean McMahon replaced him against the Pumas, showing a return to some of the intimidating form he displayed in Super Rugby.
