Pietersen set to return for Stars

CRICKET: Glenn Maxwell says he has "no idea what's going to happen” when Kevin Pietersen is added to the Melbourne Stars line-up for the Big Bash derby with the Renegades at the MCG on New Year's Day.

The former England batsman missed the Stars' seven-wicket win over the Hobart Hurricanes to open their BBL season so he could spend Christmas with his family.

"It's a good headache to have when he comes back,” Maxwell said.

"We'll all shuffle around and we'll see what happens, I have no idea what's going to happen.”

Maxwell barely got out of second gear but still smashed 58 not out as the Stars chased down the Hurricanes' 4-188 with two overs to spare on Boxing Day.

Opening batsman Rob Quiney also hit 75 and England import Luke Wright 48 as the Melbourne outfit scored 3-191.

Maxwell said it would be good to have Pietersen back.

"We're all looking forward to seeing him here and seeing the impact he has on the competition because last year was outstanding,” he said.

"Any time you have a guy with the calibre of (Pietersen), it can only help the team.”
