Peter Beattie goes door-knocking in Forde

FOR a self-confessed media tart, Peter Beattie was taking a low-profile approach this weekend in his bid to win the federal seat of Forde.

Mr Beattie was a reluctant participant in a photo opportunity at the Ormeau Fair on Saturday afternoon, where he pressed the flesh with locals after earlier doorknocking around Beenleigh.

"I'm keen at the Ormeau show not to have media around. One of the issues is because of my profile, I want to show that I'm fair dinkum," he told Fairfax Media.

"I want to show people I'm fair dinkum - I don't want to look like a smart alec."

The former Queensland premier said he had a job ahead of him to topple sitting LNP member Bert van Manen, especially in light of Saturday's Fairfax Nielsen poll that has Labor behind 48-52 on a two party preferred basis.
