Overseas trifecta is backed big for Melbourne Cup

PUNTERS are betting on another overseas trifecta in this year's $6.2 million Melbourne Cup with Dunaden, Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos all backed to win a small fortune.

Dunaden won the race last year by the narrowest of margins from Red Cadeaux with another import Lucas Cranach a close up third.

Niwot was the first Australian horse over the line in eighth last year.

Bookmakers offered $8 about a Dunaden repeat at yesterday's call-of-the-card and were swamped by punters.

One of the biggest bets of the day was $50,000 on Dunaden with Michael Eskander's Betstar, while Sportingbet also laid a bet of $20,000 at $7.50.

Red Cadeaux also came in for plenty of support. One punter had $18,000 on the Ed Dunlop-trained runner at $12, with other bets including $10,000 straight out and $10,000 each way.

Mount Athos was also strongly supported, Sportingbet CEO Michael Sullivan saying he wouldn't be surprised if the Luca Cumani-trained runner started favourite today.

"We've written more tickets on Mount Athos today than any other runner in the race ... the volume has been enormous," Sullivan said.

"There's been one bet of $10,000 on Mount Athos and plenty of smaller yet significant wagers. They just keep chipping away at it and he is the most likely to start favourite if this late money is any indication."

The big drifter yesterday was 2010 winner Americain who started the day at $5 but attracted little interest at the call-of-the-card and could start $7.50 or longer.

While Dunaden showed he was in top form by winning the Caulfield Cup, Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos haven't raced in Australia in the lead-up to the Cup.

But Dunlop said he was confident Red Cadeaux was a better horse than last year when a tilt at the Cup was almost an afterthought.
