OPINION: No-reply is worse than rejection for job applicants

DEAR prospective employers, can you please remember some common courtesy when dealing with job applicants?

Applying for a job is never fun, it is also seldom an offhand exercise one takes lightly.

Most often, those filling in the online forms, or submitting a resume by hand, put hours of thought into the detail.

And then, in this job market, they put their "Lotto" entry in - because applying for that dream job can be like entering the lottery.

The big difference is you know pretty quickly if you have won or lost in Lotto but can spends weeks, even months, agonizing if you have got that job.

So many friends and family I know have experienced the frustration and the disappointment of the "no-answer".

It can be worse than the dejection of not getting the job because you struggle to make decisions about simple things like, should I get a new plan for Foxtel, based on the element of hope you will be moving to the new job.

If a family is involved, so much more is at stake.

There could be a move, new schools, new homes etc and it would be very nice to know quickly if you should even be contemplating these desires.

Is it really that hard for employers, once they have made a decision, to send out a mass email to their applicants regrettably informing them they weren't successful?

Surely it wouldn't be that complicated?

Remember, that person applying for the job was probably you once.

And being in the uncertain environment of job hunting has enough stresses without the additional dimension of waiting for a reply.
