OPINION: Stabbing hoax a waste of time and resources

THERE must be times when a senior police officer misses the old days - when a good kick in the pants served well to both get the attention of an errant youth and to almost guarantee that youth would mend his ways.

Those thoughts may have flowed through the mind on Wednesday when nine police officers and ambulance crews rushed to the scene of a reported stabbing - only to find out the call was a hoax.

Five police vehicles and both uniformed and plain-clothed officers attended after the call that a boy had been stabbed was made from a phone box at the corner of Beach Rd and Watson St Pialba.

Constable Leigh Nancarrow is no doubt furious by the hoax and points out that the caller had claimed vital equipment and personnel that could well have been needed to attend a genuine emergency. Thankfully none occurred during the callout.

The caller claimed that the boy had been stabbed at Ernie Organ Park in Torquay just before 9am.

Here's something the person/persons need to consider before they contemplate a repeat of this idiotic stunt. What if your mother, father or sibling were in a crisis and there was no one to attend because some brainless twit had done what you did yesterday. Was the thrill you got out of it worth it?

When you are caught we will enjoy recording the fact. And you will be caught, you know.
