Operation to free up Matt Golinski's arms

CHEF Matt Golinski will undergo another round of surgery today in a bid to increase movement in both his arms.

And if everything goes according to plan, he hopes to compete in the Pomona King of the Mountain.

Doctors will today remove calcified bone on Matt's elbows, which should allow him to finally be able to fully extend both arms.

The operation is important in his bid to tackle a string of physical challenges, with the Sunshine Coast Marathon in late August also on his list.

He ran in a 10km event just eight months after the tragic Boxing Day blaze, which claimed the lives of his wife Rachael and three daughters, twins Willow and Sage and youngest Starlia.

The fire burnt the family's Tewantin home to the ground and left Matt hospitalised for months fighting third-degree burns.

When Matt first left hospital he could barely walk 200m and his heart rate was out of control.

"I just built on from there," Matt said. "I did a 1km, then 2km, then 5km, working up to two 10km in a weekend and then a half-marathon distance."

He admits the Pomona King of the Mountain - an almost vertical climb up Mt Cooroora on July 27 - might be too big a challenge so soon after surgery.

But he is determined to take part in the Sunshine Coast Marathon again.

"I can always do King of the Mountain next year," he said. "I pretty much do it every day anyway. I wake up every morning and head out because I live there.

"I look up and say to myself, 'Okay, let's do this.'"

The former regular on Network 10's Ready Steady Cook said he had always loved to run, but now it had more me

aning and was a good way to be at one with his thoughts.

Matt has been busy travelling and attending cooking events. At home he concocts recipes, cooks and writes. His next big events will be the Regional Flavours event at South Bank on July 19-20, followed by the Noosa Long Weekend Festival later this month.
