One year after request, staffing info could be revealed

THE Deputy Premier has been told to release staffing information to Mackay MP Tim Mulherin despite appealing the request all the way to the Information Commissioner.

But he may still appeal the decision.

In November last year Mr Mulherin placed a right to information request on staffing arrangements in the Premier's Department.

The department's RTI officer approved the request, however, Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney objected to the information being released on the grounds it would unfairly disadvantage some staff members and breach their right to privacy.

The matter was taken to the Information Commissioner who yesterday decided the information should be released.

In his objection to the commissioner Mr Seeney said the release would disadvantage ministerial staff finding new jobs.

A spokeswoman for the Mr Seeney, Member for Callide, said he was considering further appeals.

"The Deputy Premier appealed the decision to release ministerial staff names on the basis the release of this information was a breach of privacy and a potential security risk for staff," she said.

A spokesperson for the Premier said there was nothing unusual in Mr Seeney's objection, and did not show a rift between them.

He said the objection was to a decision the department made rather than the Premier's office itself.

Mr Mulherin said Mr Seeney's objections showed the government was determined to hide its inner workings.

"It's astonishing that a government that claims to be open and transparent went to such lengths to hide information," he said.

"What revelations are there that Jeff Seeney was so keen to hide from public scrutiny?

"Hopefully this is the end of the story and Jeff Seeney will stop trying to stubbornly block access to information the Opposition is entitled to see.

"Other ministerial offices have seen fit to release such information. What is Jeff Seeney trying to hide?"
