O'Dowd worries about Renewable Energy Target's effect

CENTRAL Queensland LNP Federal MP Ken O'Dowd says he is not at odds with party leadership over the Coalition's support of the government's Renewable Energy Target, but is worried about its effect on the Gladstone aluminiium industry.

Mr O'Dowd raised his concerns about the future of the aluminium refinery industry at Gladstone during the closed doors party room meeting on Tuesday.

"I don't disagree with the premise of the RET, or the Coalition's support of it as an aspiration towards promoting cleaner sources of energy," he said after the meeting.

But he said the current capability of renewable technology could not supply the base load power the Gladstone industry needed, and were "not cost effective at the current time".

"Therefore renewable energy sources should look for ways to meet the current market, rather than the market rising to meet them - as this will only risk the viability of the industry and potentially cost jobs in Gladstone," he said.

An example of this would be those homeowners who have not, or cannot, put solar panels on their homes - together with power generation companies, having to subsidise the energy costs of those who do have solar panels."
