JAMES O'Connor and his good mate Quade Cooper will put their friendship on hold for 80 minutes at Melbourne's AAMI Park on Friday night.

The Australian teammates will go head-to-head when the Melbourne Rebels host the Queensland Reds in round four of the Super Rugby competition.

O'Connor, who will once again captain the winless Rebels in the absence of the injured Gareth Delve (shoulder), has been moved from full-back to five-eighth in place of the injured Kurtley Beale.

With O'Connor now taking over the playmaker role from Beale, who has a broken hand, it means he will face his Queensland counterpart - Cooper.

Uncapped utility Angus Roberts will replace O'Connor at the back, while Alex Rokobaro returns to the starting line-up on the wing with Rory Sidey dropping to the bench.

Test centre Anthony Faingaa (hand) could make his first appearance of the season for the Reds, but the Queenslanders could be without half-back Ben Lucas after he injured his shoulder against the Hurricanes.
