Medical cannabis: Toowoomba doctors aren't keen to deal

NO TOOWOOMBA doctors have applied to be able to prescribe medical cannabis to their patients, according to the State Government.

The Department of Health confirmed it had not received an application from any GPs or specialists based in Toowoomba or south-west Queensland, months after the option was made available.

The news comes as the first shipments of medicinal cannabis were imported into Australia earlier this month.

A Queensland Health spokesman told The Chronicle that doctors faced a number of hurdles on different levels of government to be able to prescribe cannabis.

"Medical practitioners who apply to the Department of Health to prescribe medicinal cannabis for a range of conditions or symptoms must provide evidence that it is safe and effective for the condition and symptoms," he said.

"Additionally, before medicinal cannabis can be prescribed, doctors will also need approval from the Commonwealth Government's Therapeutic Goods Administration."

"To date, there have been five applications to prescribe medicinal cannabis in Queensland.

"No applications have been received from doctors in Toowoomba or South West Queensland."

The Federal Government's Therapeutic Goods Administration will also set up a medical cannabis hotline to help doctors who are feeling pressured by patients to prescribe the drug more freely.

The move comes as One Nation leader Pauline Hanson aims to meet Health Minister Greg Hunt this week to demand a public list of doctors willing to prescribe medicinal marijuana.
