'My plan to fix Toowoomba Second Range Crossing design'

GARRY Paynter says a plan to stop right turns from both Postmans Ridge Rd and Twidales Rd will force motorists to make long detours.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads yesterday confirmed it supported a proposal by contractor Nexus to eliminate the turns.

Mr Paynter has been following the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing project for decades as it will run through part of his Postmans Ridge property.

He's concerned the Nexus plan to eliminate right turns at the intersection of Postmans Ridge Rd, the Warrego Hwy and Twidales Rd at Helidon Spa will affect residents.

He said it would impact residents from as far away as Highfields and Crows Nest who regularly used the roads instead of travelling into Toowoomba.

Mr Paynter raised problems with the design, but also proposed a solution.

Firstly he said eliminating no right turns meant motorists would have to take at least 5km detours.

His solution is a bridge over the intersection to allow local traffic to use it as before.

Mr Panyter said that would eliminate the need for two u-turn flyovers.

The TMR said it would build an emergency access road to the TSRC on Murphy's Ck Rd with the Nexus design allowing for an interchange to be added in the future.

It said a "substantial" investment for the interchange could not be justified because of low traffic.

However Mr Paynter said the interchange should be built now.

He said plans to build a bridge to connect eastbound traffic on the TSRC to the Warrego Hwy were too expensive, and instead a road should be built.
